06.02.08: 'Sex And The City' Storms Box Office, Bryce Dallas Howard Battles The Terminator

Sex And The City chalked up the best opening weekend ever for an R-rated movie, taking an estimated $55.7 million and elbowing Indiana Jones and his Crystal Skulls into second place. Hollywood’s left scratching its collective head as prevailing wisdom ordained that a women’s picture would never open with blockbuster figures. Will Hollywood actually start changing its tune in light of Sex’s triumphant box-office takeover? Indy 4 grabbed another $46 million in its second weekend to bump its haul up to $216.9 million while horror film The Strangers made a respectable $20.7 million in its debut to settle in at No. 3. Howard Battles The Terminator
Barely two weeks after she’d been announced in the role of Kate Connor, wife of human resistance hero John Connor, in the McG-directed fourth instalment of the Terminator franchise, Charlotte Gainsbourg is bowing out. The official reason is scheduling conflicts with a French comedy she’s making; stepping into Gainsbourg’s shoes on Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins is Bryce Dallas Howard, last seen as damsel-in-distress Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man 3. Glover, Newton & Platt Leap To 2012
Roland Emmerich’s rounding up the support cast for his post-apocalyptic epic 2012. The latest names being bandied about are Danny Glover, Thandie Newton and Oliver Platt, who will join the already signed John Cusack and Chiwitel Ejiofor. Glover is negotiating to play the U.S. President, Newton his daughter and Platt his chief of staff. Emmerich’s epic follows the heroic struggles of a band of survivors left after a planetary cataclysm. More at The Hollywood Reporter
