01.31.08: 'Cloverfield' Gets a Sequel, 'Orson Welles' Lands Danes and 'Indy 4' Update

Director Matt Reeves is in negotiations to sequelize the rampaging adventures of Cloverfield’s colossal, coffee-table-shaped monster. The suddenly scorching-hot scary-movie helmer has also signed up to direct his own script for The Invisible Woman, a Hitchcock-style thriller about an ex-beauty queen who turns to a life of crime. Alt-Oscars Planned

Clooney The show must go on! So say Academy officials. Should the WGA strike continue and dampen the annual star-studded Oscars show scheduled for February 24, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences will likely roll out some historical footage and announce the winners anyway.

The Associated Press reports that if the red-carpet affair must be canceled, viewers should expect "history, film clips, and out-of-the-ordinary concepts."

Should be interesting to see how "out-of-the-ordinary concepts" are realized in a show without writer involvement. Best motion picture nominees reimagined through interpretive dance? More at Yahoo! News

01.28.08: The Coens win DGA prize, 'No Country' cast triumph at SAGs. Plus! Del Toro is falling for 'The Hobbit'

No Country For Old Men picked up a head of steam on the march to Oscar night. First, the Coen brothers snagged top prize at the Director’s Guild of America ceremony on Saturday night. Then at the Screen Actors Guild awards bash last night, the film's burly cast celebrated victory for the Best Ensemble while Javier Bardem also landed Best Supporting Actor. Also SAG-anointed were Daniel Day-Lewis as Best Actor for There Will Be Blood and Julie Christie as Best Actress for Away From Her. Accepting his SAG trophy, Day-Lewis served up a somber tribute to Heath Ledger. “In Monster’s Ball, that character he created almost seemed to be an unformed being,” said the Brit actor. “He was unique. And in Brokeback Mountain, he was perfect.” More at the DGA and Screen Actor's Guild

01.25.08: Ledger's last film shut down. Plus: 'Toy Story' going 3-D and Scorsese film changes name

Heath Ledger's death has forced production on The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus to be halted indefinitely. The Aussie actor had shot part of his role as the mysterious new member of a travelling circus run by Christopher Plummer and the shoot was due to pick up this week in Vancouver, but director Terry Gilliam and his producers are now huddled together to decide whether to recast or desert their Faustian fantasy-adventure altogether. If they do, it will be Gilliam'€™s second abandoned film: he also had to pull the plug on his Johnny Depp-starrer The Man Who Killed Don Quixote after French legend Jean Rochefort injured his back. School of Hopper: Actor Describes Strike 'Tragedy'

Sleepwalking_filmstill1_2 Premiere caught up with the Blue Velvet star at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, where he was promoting his latest film Sleepwalking. We'll have more on the film from Hopper and his costars Charlize Theron, Nick Stahl, and AnnaSophia Robb, but thought we'd share a few words the veteran actor had on the ongoing writers strike.

Hopper explained that he and Stahl don't have projects in the works because of the strike and gave a brief state-of-the-industry update from his perspective:

Bond Title Revealed!

And it’s Quantum Of Solace. Only kidding! Oh, no they’re not. That is the official title of Bond 22. Haven’t got a clue what it means apart from the fact that it’s the title of an Ian Fleming short story in the For Your Eyes Only collection, in which Bond – attending a dull dinner at Government House in Nassau, the Bahamas – mostly listens as the elderly Governor of the Bahamas regales him with the story of a tragic relationship between a former civil servant and an air hostess. Not a brilliant starting point for an action-packed blockbuster, you’d think, but it doesn’t seem story and film have much to do with each other, with the producers also unveiling that Solace will pick up right where Casino Royale finished… More at BBC News and Empire
What are your thoughts on Bond's new title? Love it? Loathe it? Feel like you're going to need a masters degree to gain entry to the film?

01.23.08: Heath Ledger Mourned, Sundance Buying Spree Kicks Off

Family, Australia Mourn Heath Ledger
As they, his fellow Australians and the rest of us mourn the hideously premature passing of a talented young actor, Heath Ledger’s family issued a statement rejecting speculation that the 28-year-old committed suicide. It’s sad that, in the midst of their grieving, his family will also have to cope with the prurient, insinuating pryings of global media vultures. More at Associated Press and Reuters

01.21.08: Sundance Proceeds with Caution, 'Cloverfield' Stomps to January Record

Polanski

Sundance: Less Lust, More Caution
Sundance’s opening weekend was kind of a damp squib, with no headline-grabbing bank-buster deals to ridicule. So far it's the documentaries bagging the contracts: HBO locked up North American rights (and The Weinstein Company took overseas) to Marina Zenovich's doc Polanski: Wanted And Desired, which lifts the lid on events surrounding Roman Polanski's 1977 conviction for sex with a minor, having already snapped up The Black List: Volume One, a profile of big-name African-Americans like Sean Combs and Chris Rock. Barry Levinson’s What Just Happened?, starring Robert De Niro, played to muted reaction over the weekend, although Christine Jeffs' sister-act dramedy Sunshine Cleaning, starring Amy Adams and Emily Blunt, is on buyers' hot list. Atonement Rules British Oscars
Big surprise, this: Atonement has snatched 14 nominations for the British Academy Film Awards (the BAFTAs), trumping No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood with nine nominations apiece. The trio will rub shoulders with American Gangster and The Lives Of Others in the Best Film category, with the films’ helmers all competing for Best Director bar Gangster’s Ridley Scott, who loses his slot to Paul Greengrass for The Bourne Ultimatum. In BAFTA’s acting sweepstakes, it’s George Clooney (Michael Clayton), Daniel Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood), James McAvoy (Atonement), Viggo Mortensen (Eastern Promises) and Ulrich Muehe (The Lives Of Others) for the boys and Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth: The Golden Age), Julie Christie (Away From Her), Marion Cotillard (La Vie En Rose), Keira Knightley (Atonement) and Ellen Page (Juno) for the girls. Charlize Theron has committed to play Viggo Mortensen’s wife in the adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s chilling, post-apocalyptic novel The Road. Theron gets the flashback role as Mortensen treks across a devastated American wasteland (post-nuclear according to Variety, although McCarthy’s brilliant book never specifies the cause) with their son, fending off marauding bands of cannibals along the way. John Hillcoat, who directed the loopy but outstanding Outback Western The Proposition, is calling the shots. More at Variety.

01.14.08: Golden Globes: Winners, Losers and the Saddest Awards Ceremony of All Time

121120071105029829

Global Meltdown
At last night’s strike-derailed Golden Globes presentation, Daniel Day-Lewis continued his seemingly unstoppable march to a second Oscar, snagging Best Actor in a drama for There Will Be Blood while Johnny Depp walked off with the Best Actor in a musical or comedy for Sweeney Todd. The pomp-free event, which hastily doled out prizes in a morgue-like atmosphere, handed its two-toned Best Film awards to Atonement, which beat No Country For Old Men for Best Drama, and Sweeney Todd, brushing aside Juno as the Best Musical or Comedy. (Amongst awards watchers, both counted as minor upsets.) Best Director went to Julian Schnabel for the French-language The Diving Bell And The Butterfly, Javier Bardem took Best Supporting Actor for his creepy pageboy killer in No Country and Marion Cotillard (La Vie En Rose) and Julie Christie (Away From Her) split the Best Actress honours, highlighting Globe voters’ global sensibilities (it is the Hollywood Foreign Press, after all). This year’s awards were all about spreading the Globe love thinly but there were still contenders with egg on their face. Big shut-outs were American Gangster, Michael Clayton and Best Actress frontrunner Ellen Page (Juno), all hoping Oscar voters were paying even less attention than the rest of us. Golden Globes: Will They, Won’t They?
Despite the kind of shameless begging that’s standard issue in Hollywood, the Screen Actors Guild is refusing to budge on its position that SAG members won’t be crossing the WGA picket line to attend the Golden Globes this Sunday, leaving the ceremony without its raison d’etre: A-list stars gushing red-carpet soundbites about their designer cladding and how humbled they feel to be nominated. Watching the Globes without stars would be like eating toast without butter or a hot fudge sundae without the hot fudge and ice cream, but it’s vast money-churning significance still has NBC, Dick Clark Productions and Globe gatekeepers the Hollywood Foreign Press Association scrabbling to find a solution.
