11.01.07: 'X-Files' Flies in July and Ledger Joins Parnassus
For X-File fanatics, July 25 can't come soon enough. The long awaited sequel to 1998's blockbuster will reteam David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Still untitled film is being kept closely guarded but promises to take Mulder and Scully's relationship in a new direction. Story aims to be a stand-alone feature. Series creator Chris Carter will direct from the script he co-wrote. More at Variety.

The reigning acting kingpin has been dethroned. Will Smith toppled Tom Cruise in Premiere's annual Hollywood Power List. The I am Legend star rose to ninth overall and became this year's highest ranking actor while the United Artists topper and Lions for Lambs actor took a nose dive to the 20th spot from last year's 13th place finish. Humanitarian leading lady Angelina Jolie tops the actress category at the 32nd spot demoting last year's queen Reese Witherspoon to 38th. Fox's Jim Gianopulos and Tom Rothman have been deemed the most powerful in all the land while newcomer Shia LaBeouf scored the 50th spot. How do Brad Pitt, George Lucas, Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Will Ferrell, and Sacha Baron Cohen rank? 
The New York Observer reports that Universal has backed out of director Robert Rodriguez's deal to remake Barbarella. Rodriguez had cast his fiancé Rose McGowan in Jane Fonda's classic role, but insiders claim the studio was unhappy with the casting choice and consequently backed out of the deal. However, Rodriguez insists the decision to part ways had nothing to do with McGowan's casting and the split was simply a budgetary one. Rodriguez is shopping the movie around to other studios with McGowan still attached.

Steve Buscemi is set to play real-life American doctor Robert Wilson in Florian Gallenberger's biopic John Rabe. Rabe, a German businessman played by Ulrich Tukur (The Lives of Others), saved more than 200,000 Chinese during the Nanjing massacre in 1937-38. Wilson remained in Nanjing during the Japanese occupation to care for massacre victims. Daniel Bruehl (Good Bye, Lenin) also joins the cast.

Legendary British actress Deborah Kerr died Tuesday after suffering from Parkinson's disease. Best known for her role as Anna Leonowens in The King and I and passionately kissing Burt Lancaster in the Hawaiian surf in From Here to Eternity, Kerr received six Best Actress Oscar nominations for her body of work which spanned more than 30 years. In 2004, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences bestowed Kerr with an honorary Oscar in recognition of her achievements on film. Kerr was 86.

In his first public appearance since his attempted suicide in August, Owen Wilson stepped out in support of The Darjeeling Limited on Thursday. Opting not to walk the red carpet, Wilson took the stage with his Darjeeling co-stars Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman, and Natalie Portman along with producer Roman Coppola when director Wes Anderson presented the film for its Los Angeles premiere. Darjeeling focuses on three brothers trying to rebuild their relationship by taking a train trip across India and is in currently in selected theaters.
