Gyllenhaal and Maguire are Brothers in arms
Even though Jake Gyllenhaal was once tipped to replace Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man, the two will finally star as siblings in the film Brothers, about a man who tends to his brother’s wife and child while his brother is off at war. In America helmer Jim Sheridan is directing the film from a script by David Benioff, based on the 2004 Danish film of the same name. More at Variety.
Broadbent slow to reveal details on Harry Potter’s Slughorn
Jim Broadbent will star as Horace Slughorn, the retired potions teacher who becomes head of the Slytherin House in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the sixth installment of the wizard franchise. More at Dark Horizons.
Saldana uniquely Uhura for Abrams’ Star Trek
Guess Who actress Zoe Saldana has landed her second major sci-fi starring role in J.J. Abrams’ reboot of Star Trek, where she will star alongside Zachary Quinto, Leonard Nimoy, and Anton Yelchin as the U.S.S. Enterprise’s chief communications officer Uhura. The role was originated by Nichelle Nichols. Saldana is currently filming James Cameron’s epic Avatar. More at Cinematical.
Freeman, Macy, and Walken are oh so Lonely
Morgan Freeman, William H. Macy, and Christopher Walken will next star as art museum security guards who plan a heist in the comedy The Lonely Maiden for Yari Film Group. You, Me and Dupree scribe Michael LeSieur wrote the film, which will start production November 12 in Boston under the direction of Garfield helmer Peter Hewitt. More at Variety.
Blades of Glory duo pick up Baster
Josh Gordon and Will Speck, the co-directors behind Blades of Glory, have signed on to direct the comedy Baster, which is derived from a short story about aartificial insemination by The Virgin Suicides author Jeffrey Eugenides. More at Variety.
