Ratatouille crawls away from John McClane with $16.5M Friday

Ratatouille12Pixar's culinary rat comedy Ratatouille took the top spot at the box office Friday with $16.5 million, a first day take that suggests a potential $50 million weekend. That would put the animated film ahead of Live Free or Die Hard, which earned $10.5 million on Friday, bringing its haul to $25.5 million since opening on Wednesday. The fourth installment of the venerable Bruce Willis franchise is expected to finish second with a gross in the low $30 million range over the weekend. The weekend's other new releases performed decently in limited release. Michael Moore's health care documentary Sicko scored $1.3 million on Friday in only 441 theaters while Evening, the ensemble drama featuring Claire Danes and Vanessa Redgrave, took in $1.4 million in 977 theaters. L.A. Film Fest Roundup #3: The Secret's Out

WwdispostWaiting in line for What We Do is Secret, Joss Whedon was to the right of me (presumably to support fellow Weselyan film alum, Secret director Rodger Grossman), as was a kid no older than 17 wearing a bullet for a necklace, had his skateboard in tow, and bared a large scab on his arm. In other words, it was the perfect audience for the biopic of Darby Crash, the lead singer of the influential L.A. punk band The Germs who died shortly after his 22nd birthday.

Rocketscience_posterbigJeff Blitz said he still stutters, but the Oscar-nominated director of the documentary Spellbound spoke eloquently about his semi-autobiographical comedy Rocket Science, a Violent Femmes-themed coming of age story about a high schooler who attempts to overcome his stammering speech by joining the debate team. Blitz told the audience gathered Monday at an L.A. Film Festival lunch talk with L.A. Times reporter John Horn that about 10 years ago he resorted to spelling when he came across a word he would get stuck on, leading to a meeting with a film exec where when asked what his film was called, Blitz quickly improvised, “R-O-C-K-E-T…Rocket Science.” The exec thought the spelled out part of the title might be a little excessive.

LAFF Roundup #2: 'Straight Time' straight up

51v18f3hkl_ss500_“Come here you!” Theresa Russell shouted to Dustin Hoffman, after she had breathlessly bounded down the stairs of the Billy Wilder Theatre Saturday night. She was running late to the Q & A that followed a retrospective screening of 1978 criminal character study Straight Time at the L.A. Film Festival. Following a hug between the two, Russell exclaimed, “oh my God, that was a long time ago.”

In fact, it was the first time since shooting the film, in which Hoffman plays an ex-con trying to walk the straight and narrow, wrapped that many of the cast and crew of the film had seen each other – so much so that the film’s technical advisor John Carlin, a former thief who helped plan Straight Time’s armed robberies, had gone to jail and been released, only to turn into a screenwriter after Straight Time finished shooting.

Moderated by L.A. Weekly critic Scott Foundas, the panel included what seemed like a full reunion with Hoffman, Russell, cinematographer Owen Roizman, producer Tim Zinneman, Harry Dean Stanton and director Ulu Grosbard, whom Hoffman hired to direct his pet project after Hoffman “fired” himself following a disasterous pre-production at Folsom prison. The production was Hoffman’s first and last for First Artists, the collective production company that was formed by Hoffman, Paul Newman, Sidney Poitier, Steve McQueen, and Barbara Streisand during the 1970s with the intention of giving its stars the ability to greenlight their personal projects for under $3 million. As Grosbard recounted, Straight Time cost $4 million, prompting a chagrined Hoffman to say, “I forgot that.”

Almighty? Not so much with $11.1 million Friday

Steve_carell1Despite its billing as the most expensive comedy of all time, Evan Almighty couldn't get as many people as expected into theaters to start paying back the Steve Carell pseudo-sequel's estimated $175 million budget back, taking in $11.1 million on Friday. The Noah's Ark-inspired comedy should make somewhere between $32 million to $35 million over the weekend, a disappointment to Universal, who was expecting a number in the $40 million range. The Stephen King adaptation 1408, however, surprised by earning $7.6 million, giving star John Cusack one of the best openings of his career and sets the horror film up for a $20+ million weekend and the number two slot. The weekend's other new release, Angelina Jolie's A Mighty Heart, had a comparatively limited release with roughly a third of the theaters that Evan Almighty played in and took in $1.1 million en route to what should be a tenth place finish for the weekend. Also notable was the fall of the Silver Surfer - Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer suffered a Hulk-size 72 percent drop from its opening weekend and wound up with $6.1 million on Friday, though the film will still earn close to $20 million by Sunday. 'Transformers' and a lot of 'Talk' at the 2007 L.A. Film Fest Preview

Don_cheadle1Film festivals often make the lofty claim that they are more than just a film festival, but in the case of this year’s Los Angeles Film Festival, that would be a fair argument to make. With a healthy mix of big studio premieres and fiercely independent films, the L.A. Film Festival has made a point with this year’s festival to embody the elements of its home city. And that theme extends beyond having the local premiere of Transformers on four separate screens in Westwood Village while What We Do Is Secret, the gritty biopic of the late L.A. punk legend Darby Crash, plays across town at the recently unveiled arthouse megaplex The Landmark.

At this year’s L.A. Film Fest, it isn’t enough that the festival will play host to the jump-roping documentary Jump!, but will have the competitive skippers perform a live demonstration on the festival promenade only moments before the film’s premiere. Similarly, a festivalgoer can take ballroom dancing lesson before a retrospective screening of the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers’ Shall We Dance or enjoy a What We Do Is Secret reunion of Crash’s former bandmates from The Germs, who perform live as part of a skateboarding tournament the festival is holding.

Last Night at the Alamo

CirclelogoWith apologies to movie palaces like Los Angeles' Grauman's Chinese Theatre, repertory theaters like Film Forum in New York, and the newfangled luxury multiplexes such as Hollywood's Arclight, The Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas is simply the best place on earth to see a movie thanks to a perfect storm of visionary owners (Tim and Karrie League), an always intriguing schedule of eclectic films, new and old, put together every month by programmer extraordinaire Kier-La Janisse, and audiences from around the world who just love films and don't ever need to be reminded to turn off their cell phones. (In fact, Cinematical posted a picture of the Drafthouse in discussing the ways movie theaters can lure audiences back.)

One week from today, the Alamo Drafthouse Downtown will turn its lights down for the final time, though they will be moving down the street from the original location. Left behind will be the venue for Mel Gibson's first public screening of The Passion of the Christ as part of Aint It Cool News' Harry Knowles' Butt-Numb-A-Thon annual event, the theater where Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino hatched ideas about Grindhouse, and a place where cult filmmakers like Russ Meyer could be discussed in the same breath as Jean-Luc Godard. SXSW Film Festival producer Matt Dentler rounds up the local tributes here while you can read all about the Drafthouse's demolition and recontruction on the theater's blog here.
